Five foreign nationals arrested on the Ohio Turnpike appeared in court Thursday for a pretrial hearing.
Jibril Abdiselam, 24; Mohammeddeq Hassan, 27; Mahamoud Mohamed, 26; Zakaria Warsame, 25, and Said Abu were charged with possessing criminal tools and forgery.
The arrests happened Friday, Nov. 13, in Braceville Township near Lordstown in Trumbull County.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said troopers pulled over a car going east on the turnpike for making an improper lane change. During a search, troopers found a machine that helps create and duplicate credit cards,WKBN reported.
According to testimony, Trooper Brandon Miller said he pulled over a Chevy Impala on the Ohio Turnpike about 11:52 a.m., near mile post 210, for an illegal lane change. He said Warsame was driving the vehicle.
“When the glove box fell down, a bunch of U.S. currency fell to the ground — 100s, 50s, 20s, gift cards,” Miller testified.
Miller said it took about three hours to confirm Abu’s identity. He had a driver’s license from Washington but Miller said it was suspended. The Federal Bureau of Investigation helped make a positive identification. Another suspect presented fake identification.
According to WKBN, the attorney representing Said Abu stood up said his client wanted the court to know he is an American citizen. All the suspects were born in Somalia and are American citizens.
The judge ruled that all charges be turned over to a Trumbull County grand jury.
They are being held in the Trumbull County Jail on $25,000 bond each. The five men, who are from the Columbus area had to surrender their passports.
The men said in court they were on their way to Pittsburgh.
